It's Super Bowl weekend, the holy grail of weekends for football fans. The day when our sport is on the biggest stage in the world. Normally this is one of my favorite days of the whole year, almost as big as Christmas. But not this year. This year my sport has been tarnished.
A team is on the verge of doing something that hasn't ever been done, going 19-0. Under normal circumstances that would be huge. No, it's not my team doing it, but contrarary to what some might believe, I think it would be really cool to witness a team -- ANY team -- making history. I am a Cowboys fan, but I am also a football fan, and I would normally love to witness history being made in my favorite sport. But this year is not normal because the New England Patriots, the team on the verge of going 19-0 didn't do so fairly. They cheated and they got caught. Their coach admitted that he cheated and what is he going to get for punishment? Quite possibly the championship of the National Football League and the great honor of being the first coach to lead his team to 19-0? Wow, Commissioner Goddell, way to be tough on crime!
I will be watching the Super Bowl on Sunday and because I am a football fan and a fan of teams who play fairly, I will be rooting for the New York Giants, a division foe who I should never, ever want to see succeed. However I do expect that the Patriots will probably win the game. They will win and they will be 19-0. But to me they will be 19-0*. Their record should accurately reflect their season and when their story is told in the Hall of Fame, they need the asterisk, because at least in one of those games that they "won" en route to their perfect season, they cheated to do it. So if the story is going to be told guys, let's at least tell it right!
